    Question Cam Wear

I am building a '42U engine and would like to use the cam set that came with. I am confused by what is considered acceptable wear/pitting on the cam lobes themselves---the shafts and gear teeth are fine. Basically , when are the lobes considered unusable? Thanks.

It will always be a judgement call. How much springpressure will you run? How much hard service do you expect to put it to?

I use a common ***eler's eye loupe to look at the pits and see if there are any sharp lines of spalling: Kind of like crystal edges where the metal has fractured, rather than digested away from rust. Fine beadblasting must be used to clean it first, but the difference is apparent.

I do not believe that minor rustpits render a cam unserviceable.
But where do you draw the line at what is "minor"?

Please replace worn bushings and tappet rollers of course.

(Oi Vey! they bleeped "chew" from "chewelers")

Opps sorry. Sons of David. My appologies.
It's a strange thing and needs refinement. I appreciate your patience.
