    Sulphur based gear oils are not recommended with bronze bushings with a high sulpher content (as H-D used) as they can cause pitting and degrading of the bushing material. That is why H-D recommended motor oil in the gearbox.

    The way I understand this is the sulphur forms a sacrificial coating on metals. On steel, the coating comes off in EP situations. However, on yellow metals, the bond is stronger than the base metal, so the coating tears off and takes some of the yellow metal with it.
