    Default 1980 xr750

Howdy all. I'm working on a 1980 xr750 for a friend. Factory manual calls for 33 to 35 degrees btdc. Racing gas,oil and racing plugs. This bike will not be raced and has been fitted with a kicker, front and rear brakes and lights. Rebuilt Fairbanks mag. motor, frame and wheels OEM. My question is whether any changes in timming, plugs and fuel would make this bike easier kick starting, and streetable. Thanks

Retard the timing 5 to 10 to start the engine, then advance it to run. How you lock the timer down is entirely up to you. Removeable spring works. you can wrap a stock s.s. Knucklehead timer strap around the FM magneto with a little modification and control it from the handlebar, if you want. Final advance point is where it sounds and runs best when you're done the rest of your mods.

Trying again. XR has a front mounted mag. Not the traditional right side like my xlch. It also has been rebuilt by Morris mag and with the manual advance/retard lever. Got the bike running before but took a heavier fella than me quite a few kick to start. Didn't let it run much as it had been sitting almost 30years. Next time I get it started with a little help I'm gonna run it around the block, feel how it feels and go from there. Thanks again for the reply.
