    Default Battery Felt

    Afternoon All,
Does anyone have a photo of a typical battery felt [new p/n 66115-23; old 4433-23A] installation on a 6V battery p/n 66006-29F. Palmer's notes slipping the felt onto the post. This would require trimming the interior 5/16" dia. hole of the felt so it would slide over the rectangular post [the post measures 1/2"W x 5/16"H]. Alternately, Palmer notes mounting the felt horizontally. This sounds like it means running the bolt through the center hole of the felt, while attaching the battery lead to the post. This doesn't sound like it would provide a solid connection(??). I appreciate your help!
    Thanks,

I trimmed mine to fit the new style post with wire cutters and oiled them. No problems in two years, posts and bolts stay clean.

Thanks upsrod! Did you mean you trimmed the small hole so it slipped onto the post and left outer diameter of the felt as is? I knew they are to be oiled. . . . I just wondered with what type of oil? Regular motor oil or something special?

Yes, I just trimmed the 5/16 round hole to a rectangle to fit tightly over the post. I use 3 in 1 oil because it is easy to apply in the little can, seems to work.

There are two sizes of felts. The small ones and ones which will slip right over the terminals. Old Dude carries both. I just got some of the larger ones from him at Denton. I have several packs of NOS small ones I have been using and simply make the hole larger by slipping a pair of needle nose pliers in and twisting it until is it big enough. Works fine and no cutting the woven felt. I have seen the bolt through method but doesn't seem correct to me IMHO. It very well may be but just seems funky a way to do it.

Thanks Tom. I have several nos felts that are 1-3/8" OD x 3/16" thick (assuming this is the larger of the 2). What size is the other? For my opening - a quick paper template, a sharp xacto knife; I ended with a clean cut, centered rectangle in the felt. I hope this approach passes muster. For the later, how many times have we traced the starting prob to a loose battery connection?? LOL
