Removing Gas Tank Sealer

I have a tank that was sealed before I got it and now it is leaking again. I can easily fix the leaks because they are cracks that can be welded. Naturally the welding will damage the existing sealer and it's obvious that it isn't sealed thoroughly anyway. I'm in no hurry to fix it so I haven't tried anything yet and have never ran into this problem before. I would like to totally remove it, fix the cracks and see if I can get by without having to seal it again. Will paint remover get rid of it or am I going to have to do one of the old rust removal tricks? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. I don't know what brand sealer it is but it is a medium tan color.

Sandblasting comes to mind.

It’s probably that Cream junk. The manufacture says to fill the tanks with Keytone and let sit. You can buy it at Home-Puke. Bob L

Yes, MEK (methyl ethyl ketone).

I've used MEK to strip out sealer and it worked very well. I filled the the tank and let it sit for a week. Then I poured out the MEk and the sealer came out along with it.

Chris, I would love to be able to sandblast the inside of tanks but how is it done without a microscopic employee and a miniature sandblaster? Do you just manipulate a flexible hose on the end of the gun and hope for the best or is there some other trick? Thanks.

I wopuld suggest that you take your tank to a shop that does the RENU prochedure. http://gastankrenu.com/
