View Full Version : Wheel offsets 1927 J

Yet again more help requests from this new but slowly getting knowledge guy from England.

Thanks for the response to my rim diameter question, simple really (if you know !)

Ok this is the new issue, the bike came with drop centre 18" rims, should have been 19" and these are on order.
Not going for clincher as I propose to do a fair amount of mileage and keep hearing tales of tyres coming of at speed, so drop centre it is.
When I stripped the old rims from the hubs the lacing was terrible, bent spokes and wrong size adjusting nipples (to small) as they came through the rim the gaps had been filled up with some sort of mastic. All in all not good.
The front wheel was set central to the hub, and the rear 3mm offset to the right (away from the drive sprocket), (all measurements calculated central between the flanges).
As the build was so poor the measurement I feel is a bit dubious!
Anybody know what the true measurement should be ?
Many thanks

I do not believe there is an offset on the rear wheel of a JD. I don't have a parts book handy, but if the book lists all rear wheel spokes with the same part number, that would imply the wheel should be trued to the center of the hub. Regardless, you should true the wheel to the center/line of the frame, which is the ultimate objective.

I should add, that a wonked frame can throw wheel truing out the window. I know this from first hand experience, as I have been bit in the ass more than twice by a frame that looked okay. It doesn't take much of a linear difference between the left, and right axel carriers to have a profound effect on the angular disposition of the wheel. A little bit won't hurt, and I'm sure even Harley-Davidson had an acceptable tolerance for that.

the 1922-27 parts book calls for one part number, 3944-25, "tire rim spoke - 9-9/16", 1925-1927 twin rear wheels"

Thanks Guys, never even thought about looking up the parts, learning again !
