My Lucky Day
By Bud Cox

Recently my wife reminded me that it had been almost 30 years exactly since I had finished our Six Cylinder Indian. We remember the date because of a newspaper report about the following incident.

When I finally had it finished, and well tuned, I took it on a test ride right through downtown Wichita. The tallest building in Kansas had just been completed, and there was a big celebration going on there. The route I had planned led me right in front of this building. Little did I know of the other drama that was taking place, which was - a troubled young man who had a grudge against the world, decided that was the day when he would "get even." As I was riding through downtown, and passing the building, the young man was working his way to the 24th floor. He was carrying a large caliber hunting rifle, equipped with a good scope. After I had passed, he opened fire on anyone he happened to see in the street below. Even some workers on nearby roofs that were lower were shot, as well as some people who were waiting on a bus. Meanwhile I was across the river and blissfully riding my dream motorcycle toward home. My wife met me and was really upset because of worrying about me. She explained the situation and we watched it unfold as the TV networks covered it. The person was wounded by police officers in a short time, but not before he killed four people and wounded about six more.

In the meantime, I was having the time of my life! I have always thought - what a great target I would have made - a bright red motorcycle - longer and leaner than any in the world (other than the Ottaway Six) lots of chrome and an exhaust sound that causes bees to swarm, wherever they are. I have always been one very lucky fellow, and I know it!

That's it for now, fellows. Ride safe and see you later.
