McQueen's Machines: The Cars and Bikes of a Hollywood Icon

By Matt Stone

Born on March 24, 1930, in Beech Grove, Indiana, Steve McQueen became one of Hollywood's best known motorheads. After some rough years in his childhood, including a stint at Boys Republic reform school in Chino, California, McQueen joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. While assigned to the tank corps, he and some friends attempted to soup up an old tank. It didn't go any faster, but this did not lessen his desire for speed.

After leaving the service, McQueen moved to New York where he studied acting. In New York, he also purchased the first motorized vehicle he could call his own---an Indian with a sidecar. After a few years, McQueen began to make a name for himself as an actor, and by the end of 1956, McQueen moved to Hollywood with his new wife. In California, he was able to pursue a career as a major film star while he continued to collect and race cars and motorcycles.

Matt Stone's new book chronicles McQueen's career through a detailed look at vehicles the actor owned. Although the majority of the book is dedicated to automobiles, a chapter is dedicated to his two-wheeled treasures. Also, unknown to many, McQueen collected several vintage airplanes which make a cameo appearance as well.

Recent photos highlighting some of the most famous machines make the book interesting to flip through. Images of documents related to a few of the machines, including a 1990 L.A. Times classified ad for McQueen's Mini Cooper, are used though out the book adding detail. The best photos, however, are the ones of McQueen driving his cars, riding the bikes, and simply hanging out with his friends. Included in these images are many used in the promotion of his movies which are sure to bring back some memories.

This is a great book for a Steve McQueen fan, especially those who are motorheads themselves.

McQueen's Machines by Matt Stone is a hardcover book, (176 pages in color) which can be found in most bookstores for $26.95 or through Motorbooks at: www.motorbooks.com, or by phone at: (800) 826-6600.
