1920 Model W
Harley Flat Twin Sports Model W
“Loaned” by Jerry Ottaway

The model W flat twin was introduced in 1919, and was built through the 1923 model year. The engine displaces 37 cu. in. or 584cc. This fore and aft layout is a departure from Harley Davidson’s usual V twin setup, and is patterned after the popular British Douglas of the time. Total production of the Model W was 9883 machines. Bigger V twins were always more popular in North America, but these “Sport Twins” sold well overseas, and helped establish Harley Davidson abroad. It was probably dropped due to manufacturing costs, which would be close to that of the better selling big twins. There is a Harley Davidson Model W Register available from Woody Carson of the AMCA, which lists 64 known survivors throughout the world. The bikes are owned by 40 enthusiasts, 18 of whom reside outside the USA.

“Impressions from the saddle” are a bit difficult on this one, as I have never ridden a Model W. If I overcome this shortcoming in my education, I will fill in this space!
