In 1911, Indian sent six factory entries to the Isle of Man to enter the Senior TT, the first year it was run on the full mountain circuit of 37 miles per lap. Special non- catalogued machines with the “little twin” sleeved down to 580 cc’s were prepared, with two speed gearboxes. As 2/3ds of the English factories were still running single speed belt drives, Indian walked away with first, second, and third places, the first and only American “sweep” The Indian team was made up of their top rider, Jake DeRosier, and Britons Oliver Godfrey, Charles Franklin, and A J Moorehouse. Finishing in first was Godfrey, followed by Franklin and Moorehouse. DeRosier finished near the end, after falling off 8 times in practice, and once in the race, proving the American riders weren’t quite ready for road racing! Indian had a bit of luck, though, as Charlie Collier’s Matchless was second, but he was disqualified, and a none finishing Scott put in the fastest lap. This bike is being restored as a replica of Oliver Godfrey’s winning #29, using all correct 1911 Indian parts. It is hoped to do the “Lap of Honor”on the Island in 2001, the 100th anniversary of The Indian Motocycle Company, and the 90th of the win. Watch this space!
